Course One: Functional Neurologic Disorders: No it’s Not All in Your Head

Speaker: Allison Urbatchka, PT, DPT, NCS, CBIS, LSVT-BIG

Course Description:

Functional Neurologic Disorders (FND) are the second most common reason for visiting a neurology clinic, coming after headaches/migraines. Historically under diagnosed, under treated and poorly understood, the medical community’s knowledge of this disorder has expanded exponentially over the past 10 years. This presentation will highlight the development of comprehensive diagnostic inclusion criteria, research based treatment techniques, and case examples from the perspective of a neurologic physical therapist.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Allison Urbatchka, PT, DPT, NCS, CBIS, LSVT-BIG specializes in outpatient neurologic rehabilitation for a variety of diagnoses including Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy, and Functional Neurologic Disorder.  She endorses a team-centered approach focused on providing the proper tools for patients to recover from, and learn how to manage, their own diagnosis to better serve all involved in these complex medical conditions. Allison earned both her bachelor’s degree and doctorate of physical therapy from Northern Arizona University. She is an APTA board certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist, Certified Brain Injury Specialist, LSVT BIG-certified clinician and Level II APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor. Since 2020, she has been an adjunct faculty member for Idaho State University’s Physical Therapy program. She is an active member of APTA Idaho and has served as a member of the Nominating Committee.

Course Two: Lymphedema: A guide for the orthopedic therapist

Speaker: Vanessa Arroyo, PT, DPT, CLT-LANA

Course Description:

This course is to help outpatient orthopedic therapists understand edema related issues that may arise during treatment and how to address them to reduce delays in functional outcomes. This will include a hands-on lab portion with instruction.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the role of the lymphatic system and its response to musculoskeletal injuries
  • Identify common outpatient presentations of edema and causes
  • Describe how excessive edema can contribute to delayed patient outcomes
  • Discuss and perform components of complex decongestive therapy that may be beneficial during orthopedic care
  • Identify contraindications to treatment and when to refer to a CLT provider
  • Understand updated Medicare coverage for lymphedema management

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Vanessa Arroyo, PT, DPT is a licensed physical therapist. She has experience treating a variety of orthopedic and neurological conditions, and is accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association as an advanced clinical instructor for physical therapist students.

Vanessa earned her doctorate in physical therapy from the University of the Pacific. In her free time, she enjoys reading, exploring the outdoors with her two huskies, traveling, and wine tasting.

Course Three: Pelvic Health 101 for Orthopedic and Rural Settings

Speakers: Andrea Trask, PT, DPT, OCS, WCS and Julie Dunn, PT, DPT, CMPT

Course Description:

In this course, we will establish foundational knowledge and skills related to pelvic health in orthopedic and rural settings. Participants will gain a novice understanding of the anatomy of the pelvic region for both males and females, and develop a strong grasp of the relationship between the pelvic floor musculature and bowel, bladder, and sexual health. The course will cover common dysfunctions affecting the pelvic region applicable to various clinical settings, enabling participants to immediately implement screening for patients with pelvic health needs and determine appropriate referrals. Attendees will learn to identify potential pelvic floor dysfunctions associated with orthopedic concerns and apply basic interventions suitable for adult pelvic dysfunction in their practice settings.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a novice understanding of the anatomy of the pelvic region for males and females.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the relationship between the pelvic floor musculature and bowel / bladder / sexual health and function.
  • Demonstrate novice understanding of dysfunctions of/affecting the pelvic region in multiple clinical settings.
  • Gain ability to screen a patient with pelvic health needs subjectively to determine appropriate need for referral.
  • Identify potential for pelvic floor dysfunction with orthopedic concerns.
  • Apply 1-2 basic educational, manual or exercise interventions appropriate for the orthopedic or rural setting for adult pelvic dysfunction.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Andrea Trask, PT, DPT, OCS, WCS is a board-certified specialist in orthopedic physical therapy (OCS) and pending candidate for board certification in women’s health physical therapy (WCS). She currently practices in an outpatient rehab setting in the Treasure Valley, treating pelvic health diagnoses across the lifespan and gender spectrum, and serves as pelvic health clinical program manager for St. Luke’s Health System.

Julie Dunn, PT, DPT, CMPT has a decade of pelvic health and orthopedic experience. She has an extensive education background, including NAIOMT, Herman & Wallace, the APTA CAPP-OB program, the Institute of Physical Art, the Barral Institute, and more.   She currently teaches the pelvic health elective for Idaho State University’s DPT program and is the education coordinator for Treasure Valley Pelvic Health.

Registrants who have a membership expiration date prior to the conference must provide proof of membership before the conference begins or they will be subject to paying the nonmember rate.

Cancellations received between September 26 and October 3, 2025 will receive a 50% refund. There will be no refunds after October 3, 2025. Unless there is a waiting list for the course, substitutions will be accepted at no charge until October 2, 2025. All substitutions must be for the same member type and rate and are at the discretion of chapter staff. No substitutions will be accepted after October 2, 2025 or if the course has a waiting list.

In the unlikely event that the chapter must cancel the course/conference, APTA Idaho will provide a refund of registration fees. APTA Idaho will not be responsible for additional costs, such as travel, incurred by registrants.

The 2025 APTA Idaho Fall Conference course is sponsored by the Idaho Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.
